Chicago Cubs president Jed Hoyer has taken a hard stance on manager Craig Counsell amid the team's failed season.
Cubs president Jed Hoyer has taken a hard stance on manager Craig Counsell amid the team's failed season. Hoyer said in a statement that he is "disappointed" with the team's performance this season and that he has "lost confidence" in Counsell's ability to lead the team going forward.
The Cubs finished the season with a record of 64-98, their worst record since 2012. The team struggled all season long, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. The Cubs ranked near the bottom of the league in runs scored and batting average.
Counsell was hired by the Cubs prior to the 2015 season. He led the team to a World Series title in 2016, but the team has not been able to reach the playoffs since then.
Hoyer said that he will begin a search for a new manager immediately.
Counsell is the second manager to be fired by the Cubs in the past two seasons. Joe Maddon was fired after the 2019 season.
