Houston Mayor John Whitmire reported widespread damage in the wake of severe storms that hit the city. Strong winds downed power lines, scattered debris, and rendered numerous roads impassable.
Tragically, the storms have claimed seven lives in the Houston area, leaving residents devastated. Record-breaking winds gusting up to 100mph have caused extensive power outages, with over 630,000 customers in Texas without electricity as of Thursday afternoon, primarily in the Houston region.
The total number of outages in Texas surpassed one million on Thursday night, according to PowerOutageus. As of Friday morning, more than 420,000 customers in the Houston area alone remain without power, accounting for 20% of all outages statewide.
The lack of electricity has sparked concerns, particularly as temperatures rise. Officials urge residents to take precautions to stay safe during this challenging time.
